What are musculoskeletal conditions?

A musculoskeletal condition refers to any disease or injury that affects your muscles, bones, joints, and their supporting tissues. Examples of supporting tissues include ligaments, tendons, cartilage, and other connective tissues.

These conditions often occur as a result of sports injuries, falls, and frequently repeating the same movement. As you get older, however, degenerative changes take place that lead to joint, neck, back, and shoulder pain. 



Degenerative changes include wear-and-tear that breaks down cartilage in joints and degenerative disc disease.

What type of musculoskeletal condition is Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS)?

EDS refers to a group of inherited conditions. Each type of EDS occurs in a different part of your body, but they all affect collagen.

Collagen is the building block of connective tissues, bones, cartilage, skin, muscles, blood vessels, and virtually every part of the body that needs strength and support.

If you have EDS, your collagen may be too weak, or you may not produce enough. Many people with EDS have hypermobile joints (loose joints) and stretchy and fragile skin. As a result, they develop dislocated joints, soft tissue injuries, and bruise easily.

How are musculoskeletal conditions treated?

Except for an emergency like a complex fracture, musculoskeletal injuries are initially treated with conservative therapies. This means your care plan may include temporarily resting the injured area or modifying your activities to reduce stress and give the injury time to heal.
